AlphaQBBS Version 7.0 (Gamma 7.01) Changes Document
===================================================
Version 7.0 of AlphaQBBS is a features update release. Since
there wasn't ant "undocumented features" reported in Version 6.0,
there weren't any repairs to be made. This version has some good
news and some bad news. The good news is that there some very
nice features added. The bad news is that the setup program is no
longer built into AlphaQBBS. Once again, AQSETUP is a stand alone
program. This change was necessary due the program's expansion.
Everything together would no longer compile. You shouldn't find
this much a deterrent though. The price to pay for this is that
the packaged arcive may be slightly larger.
Version 7.0 is backwardly compatible with Version 5.0's and Ver-
sion 6.0's control file.
* The AlphaSetup program is no longer built into AlphaQBBS. This
is still an excellent utility for building the control file. I
*HIGHLY* recommend it's use. A few changes have been made, and
performance/features have improved.
* An excellent function has been added to allow for the adoption
of "Orphaned" files. An orphaned file is one that is in a given
file directory, but not listed in the BBS's file list
(FILES.BBS). An associated control file (NoAdopt.CTL) informs
AlphaQBBS of file names that are not to be adopted. When a file
is adopted, it will be given a file description of "New File:
Adopted by AlphaQBBS".
-A is the command line parameter used to invoke this option.
The structure of the NoAdopt.CTL is as follows:
FileName.EXT
FileName
Filename.EXT
ect....
It is ascii in nature and may be constructed using AlphaSetup.
* A -Ofilename.ext command line parameter has been added to allow
AlphaQBBS to create a list of all files that were adopted
during a given operation run. The -Ofilename.ext parameter will
have no effect if the -A option isn't used.
* A -E command line parameter has been added to force AlphaQBBS
to exclude, from the compiled files listing, any files that are
missing from the MSDOS directory. Using this option "Shows them
what we have, not what we want".
* A -Mfilename.ext command line parameter has been added to tell
AlphaQBBS to create a list of files that are missing from your
BBS. The file shows drive, path and file names of the missing
files. This option will work fine even if the -E option isn't
specified. IF -X is used to cancel file compilation and
AlphaQBBS is used only to sort a FILES.BBS, the -Mfilename.ext
option can have no effect.
* The -P[Command] command line parameter has been expanded to
include the addition of both the ZOO & ZIP methods of
compressing the output files compilation.
-P3 - Use the ZIP v0.90 method of file compression.
-P4 - Use the ZOO v1.22 method of file compression.
To use the new -P options, the appropriate ZOO or Zip program
must be in the same directory as AlphaQBBS or in a directory
specified in a DOS PATH statement.
These changes should be excepted enthusiastically. The new fea-
tures will make your files area maintenance "life" a lot simpler
and easier. A total list of all of AlphaQBBS's features and com-
mand line parameters can be found in the operations manual.
At this point the development of this program will probably end,
except for any bugs that may need repaired. I am reasonably sure
AlphaQBBS is free of any major bugs or undocumented features. If
any should crop up, they will be repaired and a new GAMMA release
will be issued. Unless you, the user, can suggest any improve-
ments or features that you would like added, the next release
will be the final one and will not have an expiration date
(Yea!).
